Looking for a break from the theme parks? The dolphin tours in Orlando visitors drive out are not in Orlando at all. They run from Cocoa Beach, about 60 miles east, a straight shot down the 528 that takes roughly an hour. Cocoa Beach Eco Tours runs daily 2.5-hour dolphin and wildlife boat trips on the Banana River Lagoon, where resident bottlenose pods feed, manatees graze the shallows, and native wildlife turns up on every run. No lines, no crowds, just open water and wild Florida.

The Drive From Orlando

Cocoa Beach sits about 60 miles east of Orlando. The 528, signed as the Beachline Expressway, runs almost the whole way and takes roughly an hour in normal traffic. It is a toll road, so keep a few dollars handy each way or make sure your rental has a transponder.

Whether you start at Orlando International Airport or in the Disney World area, it is the same straight run east on the 528. Whichever way you come, a morning or afternoon trip leaves you back in Orlando in time for dinner.

Every boat tour trip leaves from 333 W Cocoa Beach Causeway. There is one dock, and parking there is free.

Wildlife You Might See

Sightings shift with season, tide, and weather, so nothing is promised. These four turn up most often.

Bottlenose dolphin surfacing on the Banana River Lagoon

Dolphin

Bottlenose Dolphin. The stars of every trip. Resident pods feed, play, and socialize right alongside the boat on the Banana River Lagoon, usually the first sighting of the run and almost always the highlight. This is dolphin watching Orlando visitors cannot get any closer to without leaving the state.

Manatee grazing in the shallows of the Banana River Lagoon near Cocoa Beach

Manatee

West Indian Manatee. Gentle, slow-moving grazers that call the Banana River home year-round. Look for the telltale surface ripple or a broad tail sliding under. In winter, sightings become more frequent as manatees gather in the warmer lagoon water, which is why manatee tours near Orlando point here rather than inland.

Great blue heron

Heron

Great Blue Heron. A patient, prehistoric-looking hunter standing perfectly still in the shallows along the Thousand Islands. Watch long enough and you will catch one strike, fast as lightning and completely silent.

Osprey with a fish

Osprey

Osprey. The lagoon’s aerial fisherman. Ospreys circle high above the Banana River before folding into a sudden dive, hitting the water feet-first at full speed. One of the most dramatic wildlife moments on any trip.

Kennedy Space Center near Cocoa Beach, Florida

Making a Day of It on the Space Coast

Most Orlando dolphin tours advertised online are day trips like this one, since the wild pods live on the coast rather than inland. The boat trip runs 2.5 hours, which leaves most of the day open. Kennedy Space Center is a short drive north and shares its land with the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, so the same trip covers rockets and roseate spoonbills. Cocoa Beach itself has the pier, the surf shops, and a long stretch of open sand.

For anyone hunting things to do near Orlando besides theme parks, this is the closest stretch of coast with wild dolphins in it. Plenty of guests come out for the boat, stay for the beach, and drive back after dark.

I highly recommend Eco Tours! It’s the best family boat ride to see dolphins, birds and manatees! The captain and boat staff are extremely friendly, funny and create an optimal experience! They even allowed the kids to help steer the boat! Definitely check it out!!!!

Coco Beach Eco Tours was a blast. My family and I chose to do this tour early morning after July 4th weekend and we had a great time. There is certainly plenty of wildlife to be found and the captain is very knowledgeable and likeable. If you have the time to check them out, you’ll have a good time and see some dolphins, manatees, birds, and maybe even more.

Dolphin Tour FAQs for Orlando Visitors

Heading out from Orlando? These are the questions we hear most before people book.

How far is Cocoa Beach from Orlando?

About 60 miles east, or roughly an hour on the 528 Beachline Expressway. It is one of the closest beaches to Orlando and the drive is straightforward. The 528 is a toll road, so budget a few dollars each way.

That depends on what you want from the day. If you would rather watch wild dolphins in their own water than wait in line for a ride, an hour each way is a fair trade. The lagoon is quiet, the boat is comfortable, and nothing about it resembles a theme park.

The dolphin and wildlife trip runs 2.5 hours on the water, departing daily from 333 W Cocoa Beach Causeway. Booking ahead is worth it on weekends and through the summer and winter peaks, when trips fill up.

Yes. There is no paddling, no experience needed, and no minimum age. Up to 36 guests per trip, with a bathroom on board and free parking at the dock. Kids tend to spot the first dolphin before anyone else.

Plan on about an hour in normal traffic. Orlando International sits on the 528 already, so it is the same straight run east. Rental car in hand, you can land in the morning and be on the water the same afternoon.

Plan on about an hour, depending on traffic and where in the resort area you start. The route joins the 528 east and runs straight to the coast, which is why most dolphin tours near Orlando are actually on the Space Coast.

Not with wild ones, and not with us. Our trips are watching trips, and the dolphins on the Banana River are wild animals in their own habitat, which is how federal rules require them to be treated. In-water dolphin experiences in the Orlando area are at captive facilities rather than on open water.

Ready to See Some Dolphins?

Daily 2.5-hour trips leave from the Cocoa Beach Causeway, an hour east of Orlando. Watch for dolphins, manatees, and native wildlife from a quiet pontoon boat. All ages welcome, no experience needed.
